Flowers & Landscapes with Wendy Dolan
June 21st - June 28th 2019 - FULL
Wendy uses a combination of techniques in her stitched textile pictures and hangings. During this week you will learn how carefully selected fabrics are pieced, patched and stitched together, creating textured backgrounds on which light fast pigment dyes are then applied using a variety of painting and printing techniques.
Surface texture is then built up by applying more fabrics, yarns and embellishing the surface with machine and hand stitchery. The stitching emphasises the detail and further enriches the textured surface. Your designs will be developed into pictures and hangings in various sizes.
Thread & Thrift with Mandy Patullo
July 11th - July 18th 2019 - FULL
During this course you will build up beautiful collages using old and new materials under the expert tuition of Mandy. Mandy has great respect for the culture of thrift and make do and mend practiced by previous generations in domestic settings and she tries to continue this tradition by using what she already has, buying only second-hand or incorporating gifted fabrics. Every piece of old fabric or needlework has a story to tell, particularly those created and found through unpicking old quilts and Mandy collages these little bits of preciousness together into new patchworks which are further embellished with carefully chosen and lovingly worked hand stitching.

You will experiment with white and black velvet, using dyes through pump sprays and develop printing techniques, making your own printing blocks to apply pattern and colour. You will also learn how to use transfer foil and mark making techniques with irons and foiling pens. These surfaces will then be covered with glistening two-tone organza ready for stitch. We will explore machine embroidery as a surface decoration including cable, whip and vermicelli stitches to enhance designs. You will have plenty of time to explore your own ideas and ultimately leave with delightful shimmering works of art.
