THE AREA & ITS SURROUNDINGS
Mallety is a small and picturesque hamlet which belongs to the commune of Saint Léger La Montagne. It is found in the Limousin amid the forests and low mountains of the Monts D’Ambazac. This area is really the start of the Massif Central and is a popular area for walkers and mountain bikers because of its verdant hills and lush countryside. Farming has always been an important part of life in the area and the Limousin is famous for its beef . You will often see some of these beautiful russet colour animals grazing in the fields.
In Mallety itself you can still see the remains of a busier village life with a historic lavoir (washing area) and well. It is thought to have been a Roman settlement at one time and a walk in the woods will soon reveal old stone walls, a remnant of bygone centuries. A walk down from Mallety will bring you to the village of La Jonchère Saint Maurice with its typically french boulangerie, boucherie and tabac. Most buildings are made from local stone and granite. Forestry is important in this region and around Mallety there thousands of hectares of woodland to enjoy.
